Mark 11:11-23- I Don’t Give a Fig!

Christ is Born!

Bible quiz- What type of leaves did Adam and Eve sew together to make themselves clothes in the garden of Eden? That’s right, fig leaves!

We actually see fig trees in many places in Scripture. The fig tree came to be recognized as a symbol of national wealth and prosperity for God’s people in the Old Testament. With this in mind, and only in the context of Our Lord’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem and His cleansing of the temple, can we understand what is being conveyed when Christ does not find any fruit on the tree, and His pronouncement that “no one eat from it again.” The time for judgement had come, judgement had been rendered, and the Gentiles who had waited in darkness would have a great light shine upon them.

This story brings up an important question for us however, brothers and sisters: Am I all leaves, or am I bearing fruit? Fruit comes from mature plants. Plants which have been received water, nutrients and time to grow. The Lord Himself causes the growth through His grace, but we can inhibit or cooperate with that growth. Am I a tree which feeds the proclamation of the Gospel through my fruit, or one which simply appears healthy from a distance? Take some time today to cultivate your faith for the love of God and neighbor!
