The Cross of Christ – A Symbol of Truth and Love Revealed

Pastoral Letter of Bishop Bryan Bayda, CSsR to Parents, Administrators, Staff and Students of Catholic Schools Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ! “For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth.Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.”John 18:37-38 The search for truth is common among us since we know that somehow truth can give us meaning in life. It helps us make sense of our world and our lives. Some simply equate their perception of reality (subjective truth) with objective truth. Others seek truth while guided by faith…

The Season of Pentecost – Mission Days Guidebook

By taking an active role in the spiritual efforts of these ten Mission Days, we are called to better understand that, by their very nature, our parish communities and families (domestic churches) have a missionary character. This missionary spirit is a consequence of the gift of our Baptism, by virtue of which we, as Christians, take upon ourselves the responsibility to believe, live, serve, and share the witness of our faith in Christ, not just among our family members, but with our neighbours, wherever we may live. Thus, the mission of our parish community is to allow our Lord to…

Ever Changing Liturgy

Ever Changing Liturgy

by Brent Kostyniuk A youngish man gets woken up by his wife on Sunday morning. “Time to get ready for church.” “No! I’m not going today.” “Give me three good reasons why,” his wife replied. “It’s always the same. The sermons are boring. Besides, I went last week. Give me three good reasons why I should go.” “It’s your duty. The Divine Liturgy is what you make of it. Besides, you are the priest.” One of the most commonly raised excuses for not attending Divine Liturgy regularly is that it is always the same. The reality is nothing could be…

2021 Pastoral Letter of His Beatitude Sviatoslav to Youth on Palm Sunday

Beloved Youth in Christ—in Ukraine and abroad! Palm Sunday, the Feast of our Lord’s entry into Jerusalem, is the day when our Church with special attention embraces you in her thoughts and prayers. Our tradition of engaging with you in prayer is a most important experience, especially now, when, because of quarantine restrictions and social distancing, we must make an even greater effort to keep our connection vibrant and strong. COVID-19 has impacted all of us: the old and the young, families and communities—which is why the Church wishes to stand by every human being. However, we especially want to…

2021 Pastoral Letter of His Beatitude Sviatoslav to the Clergy

Holy Thursdayin the Year of our Lord 2021 Dearly Beloved Brothers in the Priesthood of Christ! This year, as we experience the profound mystery of Holy Thursday, we hear the special invitation of our Lord Jesus Christ to once again sit down with Him at the mystical banquet of the Last Supper. Our spiritual eyes are directed towards the only and eternal Celebrant of the Divine Liturgy—our Saviour and Teacher, who leans down towards contemporary humanity, wounded by the current pandemic, and scourged by new types of loneliness, poverty, suffering, and despair. This Servant-Minister rises from His place of honour…

All You Orthodox Christians

All You Orthodox Christians

by Brent Kostyniuk A priest once told me how he had been chastised by an upset parishioner because he prayed for the Orthodox Church during the Divine Liturgy. We both got a chuckle out of the story; however, it did point to a misunderstanding. The prayer, repeated several times during the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, is intended for something quite different from the parishioner’s understanding. Specifically, during the Ektenia of Fervent Supplication, the following petition is prayed by the priest. “We also pray for the people here present who await Your great and bountiful mercies, for those who…

The first day of the forum concluded with a special session: “A conversation among religious leaders of Ukraine,” during which speakers discussed the Church’s position on vaccination against COVID-19 and specifically how their particular religious community influences the faithful on this matter.
