Christ is Born!
Fish seem to be the only pet we can really take care of as a family. Although my kids desperately want a dog, I recently broke and allowed them to get a beta fish which they named dizzy. Dizzy lives in a little bowl on our shelf in the living room. His world consists of a little pool of water in this enclosure. These parameters, limits and restrictions allow Dizzy to survive.
We live in a culture brothers and sisters which sees all restriction to choice to be a restriction to freedom. If I don’t have infinite choice from everything from my personal identity to my breakfast cereals I am a prisoner.
In our Gospel today, Our Lord shows us that this is not the true path to life. Just as the fishbowl provides parameters for Dizzy to live, so His commandments allow us to live. Smashing the fishbowl would kill Dizzy, trying to live with the lie that Christ has come to do away with all commandments will cause us to die.
Brothers and sisters, let us pray for the strength not to escape from all restrictions, but to submit to the lifesaving laws that the Lord has given us!
