Glory be to Jesus Christ!
At first glance our reading today seems a little confusing, and no doubt, as it is a short passage which relates the conversation the Disciples have with Our Lord as they descend the mountain after the Transfiguration. We must remember that at the Transfiguration, Elijah appeared and spoke with Jesus (along with Moses) on the mountain.
The experience of the Transfiguration naturally brought up many questions for the Disciples who misunderstood our Lord’s passion prediction and the fact that Elijah was meant to appear on the earth once more before the end. Our Lord points to the prophetic witness of John the Baptist and Elijah being similar to His, which would cause persecution.
The questioning of the Disciples contains a lesson for us today, brothers and sisters, about the nature of faith and reason. Our faith is not irrational, that is contrary to reason, but at the same time we don’t have all the answers and we never will.
The question for us today is “What is my relationship to Truth?” (Who is a Person- Christ.) Do I approach Him with the humble understanding that I am indeed a disciple (with means “learner”) or do I approach Him with the false belief that I have all the answers or own all knowledge and wisdom?
Truth is not relative, and our faith is not against reason, but let us never forget that there is a God and that we are not Him! Let us continue to turn trustingly to the source of all truth in all humility.
Glory be to Jesus Christ!
