Mark 9:10-16- A Little Foolishness [Spoilers: Rogue One]

Christ is Born!

From the outside looking in there are many situations which appear as though the good guys have lost because they are silenced. The latest Star Wars Movie “Rogue One” is a great story of standing up to evil and inspiring hope- a story filled with sacrifice for the greater good. I discussed the movie afterwards with my seven year old son who was disheartened that “all the good guys died” in the movie. Sure enough they did all die, but there was something worth dying for, and because of that in the end, the good guys did win. Although it was foolish for the small band of rebels to infultrate the Imperial base, their foolishness saved the day.

Our Lord refers to the mission of Elijah to prepare the way before the end. John the Baptist came in this spirit to prepare the people for the coming of the Lord. He preached repentance, and because he fearlessly opposed the adultery of the ruler at the time, was locked up and executed. From the outside looking in it appears that his mission was a failure. And yet, we know that some of the first disciples of the Jesus found their way to him through John’s preaching.

In our Christian walk we are called to be strategic, shrewd and tactical when it comes to preaching the gospel. But let us also season our mission with a little holy foolishness, knowing that the Lord will take our sacrifices offered Him and use them to change the world!
