Glory be to Jesus Christ!
Ever prefer the Jesus in your mind to the one which we have been presented with through the Scriptures and the Church He established? In his later life, Thomas Jefferson, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States, and the principal author of the Declaration of Independence, decided to make his own version of Jesus. Very meticulously he took a razor and cut out many of the miracles, the Resurrection and other things he didn’t really like about the God-man he had read about in the New Testament. This book he referred to as “The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth.”
In our reading today Mary is presented with the truth that her son will be both the light to the nations, the glory of His people, as well as a sign which will be contradicted, and not only this, but a sword of sorrow will pierce her as well. Following the truth will bring glory and salvation and will come at a cost. The real Gospel is always this way brothers and sisters.
Would we rather be sons and daughters of the King, princes and princesses, or self-help stars, picking and choosing what we might like at the moment? Let us pray for the strength not to be left to our own devices!
Glory be to Jesus Christ!
