Glory be to Jesus Christ!
Brothers and sisters, I have been enjoying very much our daily (or semi-daily) reflections together at Musings with Fr. Mike. I have found the experience of reflecting on and writing about the daily lectionary readings beneficial and enriching for my own walk with the Lord. I pray these meditations on Holy Scripture have been fruitful for you as well. These daily reflections (and they will actually be daily) will be taking a bit of a different turn and I am excited to offer you a personal invite to join us in breaking open the Word and coming to know the Lord.
Truly brothers and sisters, we are “The Visited Planet” as Philip Yancey reflects in his book The Jesus I Never Knew. Our Lord truly has visited this world, walked our streets. In His public ministry he preached the gospel, healed the sick and even raised the dead. Through His passion, death and Resurrection He offers us eternal life. In the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist He offers us His Body and Blood as food and drink.
And yet, although we meditate on these mysteries throughout the liturgical year, if we do not dive deeply into the Scriptures, the treasured record of the deeds and actions of our Lord and His saints, we risk Jesus remaining “the Man that we never really knew.” St. Jerome reminds us that “ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ,” and St. John Chrysostom implored his congregation to sell whatever they needed to simply to buy one book of the Bible if possible. In a world where the entire canon of scripture is available at our fingertips at the speed of light (in multiple translations), do we read and reflect upon in more or less than our Fathers did?
